TL;DR: On October 21, 2026, Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet, a separate app in which Claude works as what Anthropic calls “a proactive agent.” It sends a morning brief from your connected apps, messages you when something needs you, and works on tasks in the background, but it waits for your approval before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything. Anthropic says it built Duet “for professionals and small business owners.” Access is by waitlist, starting with US Pro and Max subscribers, and Duet draws on the same usage limits as the rest of Claude.
What happened
Anthropic’s announcement, dated October 21, 2026, says Claude Duet is available as a standalone app on iOS and Android and on claude.ai. For the research preview it’s “included in Pro and Max plans and uses the same usage limits as the rest of Claude,” and you get in through a waitlist. Anthropic says it’s starting with Pro and Max users in the US and will email people when Duet is ready for them.
What Duet does, according to Anthropic:
- It comes to you first. Each morning it sends “a short brief on the most important items across your connected apps,” then messages you during the day “only when something needs your attention.” You can tell it what you want to hear about and how often.
- It works while you’re away. Duet “has a virtual machine with its own browser,” so your laptop or phone doesn’t have to stay on. You get a notification when a task is done or needs your review.
- It reuses your Claude setup. It carries over your memory, skills and connected apps from your Claude account.
- It connects to business tools. Anthropic says Duet can use the “over 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace.” Its examples include finding missed Gmail and Slack messages, checking QuickBooks or Stripe for unpaid invoices and drafting reminders, preparing and running payroll in Gusto, sending agreements through Docusign, drafting follow-ups from HubSpot deal history, and setting up a Shopify store.
- It can buy things, with your approval. Purchases go through Link, Stripe’s digital wallet: Duet confirms the item, Link asks you to approve the spend, and it pays with a virtual card “so your real card number isn’t shared.” It can also check out with Shopify’s Shop Pay. Signing in to sites with logins saved in 1Password is listed as coming soon.
Anthropic says it designed Duet around its Claude Opus 5.5 model.
Why it matters
Most AI tools wait for you to ask. Duet is built to read your inbox, calendar and books and decide what’s worth interrupting you for. For a small business, three details in Anthropic’s post matter more than the feature list:
- Background checks use your plan. Duet “shares your plan’s usage limits with the rest of Claude,” and “its background checks count toward those limits.” Anthropic says it checks connected accounts “every few hours, because checking nonstop would use up your plan’s limits much faster,” and that bigger jobs such as a financial model or a deck “require more model turns and background work.” If you already run into Claude limits, an agent that works in the background makes that more likely.
- Approvals are built in, with hard limits. Before Duet “sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes anything, it shows you exactly what it’s about to do and waits for your approval.” Some actions are off-limits even with approval, “like trading securities or moving money between accounts.” Anthropic also says a new classifier is designed to reject sharing “the strictest tier of information, including credit card numbers and government identification,” and that health or personal-finance details go out only when you’ve explicitly told Duet to send them.
- It’s an early preview. Anthropic says Duet “still might misread a thread or miscalibrate what’s urgent,” that personal errands such as booking tickets “aren’t quite as strong,” and that it “can’t yet show you its browser.” For now it lives in its own app, separate from the main Claude app.
What to do now
- Decide whether the waitlist is worth it. It’s for US Pro and Max subscribers for now. If you’re on one of those plans, Duet is included in your plan during the preview, Anthropic says. If you aren’t, there’s no way in yet, so there’s no reason to upgrade just for Duet. Our Claude and Codex usage limits guide explains how those plan limits work.
- Connect the fewest apps that matter. Start with email and calendar, judge the morning brief for a week, then add accounting or payments. Anthropic says you can disconnect any app Duet has access to.
- Tell it what to watch and how often. Fewer, narrower checks should mean less of your plan spent in the background.
- Read every approval before you tap it. Duet asks before it pays, sends or signs, but an approval is only as good as your check of the amount, payee and recipient. The same question came up when Wix let its AI agents pay bills through Stripe’s Link.
- Treat payroll and invoice work as drafts. If you connect QuickBooks, Stripe or Gusto, have a person review every reminder and payroll run before it goes out.
What’s still unknown
Anthropic hasn’t said when Duet will open beyond the US, whether Team or Enterprise plans will get it, or what it will cost after the research preview. It says it will “share more details about how Claude Duet is designed for safety in the coming days.” We’ll update this page when it does.
